“French Toast” might sound fancy but in France it is known as “Pain Perdu” (lost bread), essentially it is how you salvage stale bread in order to avoid wasting it. Easy, delicious, on budget no waste philosophy so you can feel good about your sugar rush!
Ingredient:
- sliced bread* (about 4 slices)
- 1/2 cup of milk
- 1/4 cup cane sugar
- 2 eggs
- Fresh Vanilla
- Fresh Berries
*I have used frozen sliced bread it appear to soak the liquid best.
Step 1:
In a dish (I like to use a rectangular casserole) mix the milk, sugar, eggs and scrapped vanilla bean.
Dip the the bread and let stand for 10-15mn with a spatula flip the bread so the other side can soak the mixture.
Step 2:
Heat a large pan on medium/low heat. Melt some butter to oil the pan. With the spatula place bread in the pan, let cook undisturbed one side until lightly brown, flip and cook the other side.
Step 3:
Places the bread on a plate add berries and if you are feeling overly decadent add powdered sugar and maple syrup.
Voila!
